The Fieldfare is a chunky member of the thrush family, easily recognized by its chestnut-brown back, spotted breast and distinctive grey head. Though looking similar to the smaller Mistle Thrush, Fieldfares have a more upright stance and stripy facial markings. These sociable birds breed across northern European and Asian forests, but migrate in enormous, noisy flocks to spend winter in the UK's relatively mild climate. Here you'll regularly encounter groups of them feeding energetically on berries, fruits and insects found on the ground, often squabbling noisily with each other. Come spring, Fieldfares build their nests together in large colonies in northern coniferous woodlands, filling the forests with their rich, liquid birdsongs.
