I remember living in Paris in the 70s when Mitterrand was seen as the greatest threat to France, with the prospect of a Socialist president causing widespread concern. When he won the 1981 election against Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, a right-wing candidate, it was a huge surprise for France. Ironically, Mitterrand's policies turned out to be more right-leaning than Giscard's. Today, when people compare Marine Le Pen to a fascist leader, they should take a closer look at Macron's recent years in power, which have been marked by increasingly authoritarian governance.
