French President Emmanuel Macron has called a snapparliamentary election, after France's National Rallyparty surged to victory in the European election thisweekend.

The far-right party won more than double the votes ofMacron's centrist alliance, leading to the president tosay: "I cannot act as if nothing had happened".

The parliamentary election will take place on 30 Juneand 7 July - but Macron's own position as president is not at stake.
