Band of Brothers on Thanksgiving Day 26 November 1942 ♤ One of the most memorable training exercises occured in November, 1942, on Thanksgiving, at Camp Toccoa. It would forever be called "The Hawg Innards Problem". The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment Commanding Officer, Bob Sink, ordered that hog entrails from a local meat-packing company be scattered over an area 20 feet wide and 60 feet long. Barbed wire was strung from stakes 18 inches off the ground. Machine guns loaded with live ammunition were mounted on two-by-four wooden supports and the tripod legs sandbagged down so the guns remained stable. The men were required to crawl through the bloody gore as .30 caliber bullets whizzed by overhead.

While the exercise drew plenty of gripes from the rank and file, it drew none from Dick Winters, who felt it set up a true combat atmosphere: "The use of live ammunition gave the men the incentive to keep head and butt down in the hog guts ♤
