Recently the Pope made some statements about the condition of the human heart that raised some eyebrows because it sounded so much like the teachings of the early church heretic Pelagius. Pelagius was a rival of Augustine and eventually Augustine won the debate and developed the doctrine of original sin which is commonly held in the western church by Roman Catholics and Protestants alike. But the eastern Orthodox church, while also condemning Pelagius, never adopted the Augustinian view. Could the Western church have had this one wrong for 1600 years?
