Rays are a type of cartilaginous fish closely related to sharks. They are found in oceans worldwide, ranging from tropical to temperate waters.
Rays have large, flat bodies with wing-like pectoral fins fused to their heads. Their eyes and gill slits are on their upper side, while their mouth is on the underside.
The largest ray species is the oceanic manta ray, which can grow up to 23 feet wide and weigh up to 4,400 lbs. Other large species include the reef manta ray and the spotted eagle ray.
Rays have a variety of feeding strategies. Some, like the manta ray, feed on plankton by funneling it into their mouths using cephalic lobes. Others, like the pelagic stingray, hunt small fish and invertebrates.
