Alan's Animal Diaries is a series I am working on documenting and capturing footage of a wide variety of animal species from around the world profiling one specific species in each episode with a focus on wildlife that can be found by exploring a local wild place or local Zoo or Wildlife Park. My overall goal is to discover new species and document their behaviour and how they interact with others of their species. These short videos give viewers a taste of these amazing creatures which live alongside us within our natural world.
Here are some amazing animal facts.
The male Gentoo Penguins mark the start of the breeding season by gifting pebbles to females. This is something you can often observe while visiting Edinburgh Zoo's Penguin colony which has the largest outdoor penguin pool in Europe at their Penguins Rock. The pebbles are the Gentoo's equivalent of humans gifting a companion with an engagement ring which the male Gentoos use to court a potential mate.
The Gentoo Penguin species is a close relative of the Adelie Penguin and the Chinstrap Penguin. Gentoo Penguins have a number of different vocalisations but the most common one is it's loud trumpeting sound where it's head is thrown back.
The Gentoo has a wide white stripe across the top of it's head and it's red orange bill. It has pink white webbed feet and has a medium sized tail. Gentoo Chicks have grey backs with white fronts.
The earliest scientific description was made in 1781 by Johann Reinhold Foster with the Gentoos being spotted in the Falkland Islands.Gentoos can reach a height of 51 to 90cm which make them the third largest species of Penguin after the Emperor Penguin and the King Penguin.
The breeding colonies of Gentoo Penguins out in the wild are located on ice free surfaces. Penguin colonies can be found on the shoreline or can be located more inland. They tend to prefer shallow coastal areas and often nest between tufts of grass. Gentoos have been spotted in South Georgia and also on Antartic islands, South Sandwich Islands and Kerguelen Islands.
The breeding nests are usually made from a roughly circular pile of stones and can be fairly large. The stones are fiercly guarded which can often lead to some noisy disputes and attacks between individuals. Two eggs are laid and the parents share incubation, changing shifts on a daily basis. After around 34 days the eggs hatch and the chicks remain in the nests for around 30 days before joining other chicks in the colony to form creches. The chicks then molt and then go out to sea at around 80 to 100 days.
A much small number of Gentoo Penguins can be discovered on Macquarie Island, Heard Islands, Crozet Islands, South Shetland Islands and the Antartic Peninsula. There are estimated to be over 600,000 birds worldwide. Gentoo Penguins enjoy hunting for squid, krill and fish.
