They get their "dumbo" nickname from their ear-like fins that extend from the mantle above each eye, resembling the Disney character.
They are found worldwide in cold, abyssal depths ranging from 1000-7000 meters.
Grimpoteuthis bathynectes is a deepwater species first described in 1990, known from only 13 specimens collected from the Tufts Abyssal Plain and Cascadia Abyssal Plain in the northeastern Pacific at depths of 2816 to 3932 m.
Their diet includes crustaceans, bivalves, worms and copepods, which they likely trap in their arm webbing and move to their mouth using their cirri (fingerlike projections along the arms.🦑🪼
