One of the saddest lessons of history is when people have been lied to long enough by institutions they have been conditioned to trust, they tend to reject any evidence of those lies. They get to where they are no longer interested in finding out the truth. The lies have captured them. Eventually, it becomes too painful for them to acknowledge, even to themselves, that they were so gullible and so naïve.

Sure, finding the occasional straw of truth awash in the ocean of lies and confusion that we're constantly being drowned in does require vigilance, dedication, and courage. But, if we all don't start practicing these tough habits of thought soon, we'll never be able to solve the monumental problems that face our country. We'll just continue being a nation of suckers who are being led to our own annihilation.

"It is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth -- and listen to the song of that syren, till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those, who having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it might cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it." - Patrick Henry (1775)
