Music For The World

I heard the birds singing all morning
On & on into the night they sang
Like they don’t know what’s round the corner
So sing while they can

And I can hear tomorrow dawning
At the closing of the day
I sing for hours & hours & no-one
Hears a word I say

But I have music for the world
That could melt a heart of stone
That says more than I can say
With just words alone

In a sea of endless song
Songs are all I have to trade
Will the human heart go on
Or just fade away?

My voice I know is cracked & broken
Not sugar sweet like the rest
My blackbird hides from all that pounding
High up in his nest

And my songs go out of time
Can’t keep up with the machines
I’ve always listened to that drum
That beats inside of me

Always listened to that voice
That cannot be bought or sold
That’s worth more than any fame
Worth more than any gold

There are far too many souls
On this crowded little ball
We can’t make so many well
We can’t feed them all

And our crowded little ball
Has taken all it has to take
Plastic songs of plastic soul:
We’re drowning in the things we make
We’re drowning in the things we make

But I have music for the world
Like a Eurovision song
That means every word it says
Just this once

I have music for the world
I have songs of love & death
Sung with all my tiny heart
& my final breath
& my final breath
