Donald Trump celebrates huge success: court halts proceedings

Donald Trump celebrates a surprising success in court after a guilty verdict. The former US president, who is regularly in the headlines due to his various legal disputes, only suffered a major setback at the end of May: In New York City, he was found guilty on all 34 counts relating to the concealment of hush money payments. But now there is good news for the Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election.

Trump is facing another major trial in Georgia. He is accused of trying to influence the result after his defeat in the 2020 election by asking the election official to “find” around 11,000 additional votes. These votes would have decided the close race in Georgia in his favor. A total of 41 charges are directed against Trump and other co-defendants.

Trump's lawyers have now succeeded in obtaining a stay of proceedings until next year in appeal proceedings. The appeals court ruled in Trump's favor and determined that the responsible prosecutor, Fani Willis, could be proven to have a possible conflict of interest, which must now be investigated. This investigation will not be completed until March of next year - i.e. after the important US election in November 2024.
