In folklore, a revenant is a spirit or animated corpse that is believed to have been revived from death to haunt the living. The word revenant is derived from the Old French word revenant meaning 'returning '.

Poltergeist is a German word that means "noisy ghost". Poltergeist ghosts can manipulate the physical environment, move objects, engage in physical attacks or ignite fires.

Necromancy is the practice of magic involving communication with the dead by summoning their spirits as apparitions or visions for the purpose of divination; imparting the means to foretell future events and discover hidden knowledge. Early necromancy was related to - and most likely evolved from -forms of shamanism or prehistoric ritual magic that calls upon spirits such as the ghosts of deceased forebears. Classical necromancers addressed the dead in "a mixture of high-pitch squeaking and low droning".
