Nine Wisconsin correctional officials, including the warden of Waupun Correctional Institution, have been arrested for their roles in the deaths of two inmates, showing “blatant disregard for the safety of human beings,” according to Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt.

One inmate, Cameron Williams, was dead in his cell for 12 hours before being discovered; he had collapsed earlier, but staff neglected to check on him.

Another inmate, Donald Maier, died of malnutrition and dehydration after being denied nine out of twelve meals over four days.

The deaths led to charges against Warden Randall Hepp and several correctional officers and nurses.

Schmidt expressed anger over the treatment and deaths of the inmates, NBC News reported.
