The Dunnock is a small brown bird found all across Britain. Despite its drab looks, it has some quirky behaviours. The male Dunnock doesn't actually build the nest himself. Instead, he attracts a female by singing and bringing her twigs. She then builds the nest and lays the eggs. Dunnocks are very tame birds and will happily nest in gardens and parks. They get their name from the purring or subdued "dun-oc" sound the male makes during breeding season. In winter, Dunnocks join up in loose flocks to find food together. Their diet is mostly insects and seeds foraged from the ground.
