Attorney General Merrick Garland fired back at House Republicans, saying he and the Justice Department “will not be intimidated” with threats of being held in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over audio tapes of President Biden’s March 2024 interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur as part of an investigation on whether Mr. Biden mishandled classified documents. The attorney general’s testimony came during a nearly five-hour long oversight hearing before the House Judiciary Committee. In mid-May 2024, the same committee, led by Republicans, approved a contempt resolution against the attorney general over a battle for the Biden interview tapes. President Biden ultimately asserted executive privilege, and the tapes were not handed over to lawmakers. Other topics in this hearing included border security, violent crime, threats against public servants and prosecutions from the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
