Rahan.

The son of the fierce ages.
Episode Ninety-Two.

By Roger Lecureux, drawn by Guy Zam.

The long legs.

The man had only one breath of life left.
His whole body was covered in reddish blisters and his skin was peeling off in shreds.

Ka-ha will join the.
Territory of shadows. Do not imitate him. Brother.
Do not try to discover the secret of the "River of Fire."

He found the strength to designate the mountains that loomed beyond the immense savannah.
Ka-ha saw the “Men of stone.” This.
It is horrible.

The river of fire? Stone men? Rahan wants to know!
It was too late.
Ka-ha's face froze.
His eyes stared at the sky.
He had stopped living.

Page Two.

The son of Crao shuddered as he thought of the suffering this hunter must have endured.
The fire consumed his body.
How long had he been wandering around the savannah?

The ocean of giant grass, taller than a man, stretching as far as the eye can see.
Rahan hopes you do not show him that path!

The knife spun on the stone and stood still, the blade pointed towards.
The savannah!
No! We always drive Rahan on the most difficult tracks!
Let us start again!

He spun the weapon again, and it pointed in the same direction again!
No!
Rahan, will not obey you!

With an angry slap, he threw the knife a few steps away.
He was unaware, of course, that this gesture of anger could be fatal to him!

Page Three.

When the rustling of the foliage alerted him, he did not have time to dodge the boa that attacked.

The son of Crao had often fought serpents. He knew the power of these silent killers.

All his muscles were tense, trying to loosen the reptile's grip.
But in vain. The monster's coils, slowly, inexorably, crushed his legs and his torso.

The contractions became even stronger and he suffocated.
His vision became blurred.
You. You are stronger than Rahan. You. You.

As happens to those who are about to cross the border of the kingdom of darkness, dazzling thoughts assailed him.
He returned to thoughts of Mount Blue decimating all his people.

Page Four.

He saw again Crao-the-father dying and bequeathing him the necklace of claws.
The necklace of loyalty and courage.

He also saw himself again, stealing his ivory knife from the formidable chief of the river clan.

And he let out a groan.
And the knife was there almost under his hand!
His fingers tensed desperately.

And closed on the polished handle as a red veil fell before his eyes. In a final effort, he struck!
Ra-ha-ha!

The red veil turned to black and he sank into darkness, without even feeling that the monster, his head nailed to the ground, was steadily fading away.

Page Five.

When the son of Crao regained consciousness, heavy rings still weighed on his body.
But it was easy for him to free himself from them.

Rahan was stupid to get angry with you.
You have, once again, saved his life!
Rahan will obey you!

As an experienced hunter, Rahan knew that he risked getting lost in this labyrinth of tall grass which would hide any point of reference from him.

As a herd of giraffes passed in the distance, he sighed.
Rahan would need a long neck like these animals.
Or long legs like theirs.

Rahan will never have a long neck.
But he can, perhaps, make himself "Long-legs"!
A vision of his childhood suddenly came back to his memory.

Page Six.

That of hunters perched on simple ladders to climb into the trees.
He himself had often played on these scales.

They could only walk a few steps because their "Legs" were prisoners but what if his "legs" were freed?

Rahan's imagination was such that the image of a dislocated ladder gave way in his mind to that of crude stilts.

Rahan knows how to do "long legs"!
Ra-ha-ha!
Once the idea was germinated, the son of Crao always knew how to improve it, perfect it, refine it.

This is why he knew how, in two long branches, to fashion what would be his “Long-legs.”
Beyond the territory of herbs, Rahan will discover the secret of the “River of Fire”!

Page Seven.

His sense of balance allowed him, after a few tries, to stay perfectly on the stilts.

To make his walking easier, he thought of tying the stilts to his legs using vines.
Rahan will be taller than the “High Grass”!

Shortly after, in fact, he made his way through the reddish ocean of the savannah.
Frightened “Long-necks” fled before him.

This walk was exhausting but, from time to time, an isolated tree allowed him to take a moment of rest.

Ka-ha's last words then come back to his mind.
Do not try to discover the secret of the river of fire!
Ka-ha saw the "Stone Men." It was horrible!

Page Eight.

Then he resumed his walk towards the distant mountains.
Rahan will not reach these mountains before night!

A light wind rose which suddenly brought him a familiar smell.
The long manes!

The beasts, a male and a female, burst out of the tall grass before he had time to reach for his knife! Unbalanced.

He drew his weapon just as the lioness jumped up, all claws out!

Ra-ha-ha!
But these claws did not even touch him.
The ivory blade had cut the throat of the feline.

Page Nine.

In turn, the large male attacked the son of Crao, whose movements were hampered by his long legs.
A handicap which risked being fatal to him.

Back “Long mane!” back!
But he did not have time to free himself from the cumbersome stilts.

He was suddenly slammed to the ground!
The terrifying mouth of the beast hid the sky from him and he struck, and struck, and struck!

Ra-ha-ha!
With its flank wide open, the lion reared up, roaring and collapsed near the body of its female.

Hum. "Long legs" are useful but they can be dangerous.
A paw had lacerated his torso but Rahan knew that this wound would heal quickly.

Page Ten.

Learning the lesson of this fight which had almost been fatal to him, he pulled the vines which pinned the stilts to his thighs.

Then he plunged back into the savannah.
Soon, this presented a vast, burnt expanse.

Which he can cross without the help of the “Long Legs.”
But Rahan has not yet crossed the territory of the “High Grass!”
He will keep you with him!

The sun was descending over the mountains when he saw in the distance an unusual thing.
Is this the “River of Fire” that Ka-ha spoke of?

It was like a long vaporous serpent which, sliding from the mountains, undulated towards the savannah. More intrigued than worried, Rahan picked up the pace.

Page Eleven.

It was a wide river from which light steam rose.

The son of Crao had witnessed many natural phenomena.
But he had never seen a “River of water” smoke.

As he cautiously crawled towards the strange river, a rush of heat enveloped him.
Rahan wants to know.

He dipped a finger in the water and pulled it out screaming.
This water was as hot as that which is boiled over fires to cleanse the plains of hunters!

He suddenly explained Ka-ha's horrible blisters.
Skin in tatters.
If this unfortunate Ka-ha fell into the "River of Fire" his suffering must have been terrible.

Page Twelve.

Rahan walked along this river for a long time.
The bank he trod had a consistency of stone.

But it sometimes gave way under its weight, revealing a grayish crust.
Even Crao, who knew so much, never spoke of a ground covered with a stone skin!

How could it be imagined, in this age of ignorance, that waters laden with limestone had formed this deposit?
Rahan will probably never understand this mystery!

Oh!
Rahan froze.
What he discovered, in the river cove, was frightening.

The men of Stone!

Page thirteen.

Bodies lay here and there, and sometimes tangled together.
The “Stone-skin” had petrified these men in death.

Rahan does not understand!
Rahan would like to know!

Overcoming his disgust, the son of Crao felt these polished corpses that were like the ivory statuettes sculpted by northern hunters.

When a voice thundered behind him!
Fire hair should never have ventured into the territory of the Gahoudas!

He will perish like these ones!
His body will become stone and will remain so until the end of time!
The tall grass parts in front of a dozen men.

Rahan does not come as an enemy!
All those who violate the territory of Gahouda are enemies!

Page Fourteen.

Brandishing their clubs the hunters sprung forward.
Rahan detests fighting with "Those Who Walk Upright", but since you force him to.

He defends his life!
The "long leg" spun, mowing down the first attacker.

For a moment, the terrible swirls kept the Gahoudas at bay.
But, one against ten, the confrontation could not last.

A mace, thrown with precision, hit Rahan in the back of the neck.
You will know that no one has ever escaped the Gahoudas, "Hair of fire"!

Take the enemy to the village.
Grawa will decide when we will offer him to the god Gahou!

Page Fifteen.

When the son of Crao came to, he was attached to a totem erected in the center of a village of huts.
All of the clan was watching him.

The hunters from the land "Behind-the-tall-grasses” are too curious.
A man approached, who carried the ivory knife on his belt.

Ka-ha also wanted to spy on the Gahoudas.
Like him, you will be sacrificed to the god Gahou!

An ovation greeted the words of the Grawa-la-chief.
If Rahan is going to die, why do you not kill him on the spot!

Because Gahou demands that we sacrifice living beings to him.
You will be delivered to the river at sunrise.
Grawa has spoken.

Page Sixteen.

When night came, all the Gahoudas disappeared into their huts.
Only Gaiya, the hunter whom Rahan had knocked out, kept watch near the captive.

It is an honor for Gaiya to watch over the offering that will be made to Gahou!

When the sun shines on this mountain you will be thrown into the smoking water.
Life will leave your body, but your body will remain because with each flood the river will envelop it with a new layer of stone!

Rahan may have a chance to free himself, but Gaiya will have to approach him!
Gaiya, ecstatic, stood ten steps away.

The son of Crao had an idea, and it was necessary.
The Gahoudas are as cruel as they are stupid!
Rahan despises their god! He spits on Gahou!

Page Seventeen.

What he had predicted happened.
Indignant, Gaiya rushed.
Gaia would like to kill you with his own hands to punish you for this sacrilege!
He.

Rahan's legs extended with astonishing suddenness, hugging the man's neck.
Gaiya must not scream!

Gaiya did not scream.
Exhaling a final gasp, he collapsed at the captive's feet.
His assegai remained stuck in the totem.

A moment later, he managed to cut his bonds.
Rahan has nothing more to do in this village.
But he will not flee without his knife!

From each hut murmurs arose.
No doubt they were talking about the nearby sacrifice offered to the god Gahou.
Rahan wishes he did not have to kill Grawa!

Page Eighteen.

Grawa slept under a moonbeam.
But he stood up when Rahan snatched the knife from him.
Fire hair!

And as the son of Crao fled, he shouted orders alerting his hunters.
Firehair Has broken free!
Hunt him down!
Kill him!

The Gahoudas must have been very familiar with their territory because they spread out, preventing the fugitive from entering the savannah.
Kill! Kill!
Kill!

When Rahan felt the trap closing, he had reached the cemetery of the stone men, which under the moon was even more fantastic.

The nearby river of fire was the only way to escape the Gahoudas!
He rejected the solution as impossible when.
The Longs legs!

Page Nineteen.

The hunters chasing him stopped, stunned.
“Fire-Hair”, defied Gahou and walked on the “Smoking River”!

The son of Crao had perhaps never found himself in such a perilous situation.
If he lost his balance it would be certain death!

He did not even pay attention to the assegais that fell around him.
He progressed slowly, probing the bottom of the river at each step.

Fortunately this was shallow.
A few more steps and he would reach the other shore.

Ra-ha-ha!

Page Twenty.

Farewell, Gahoudas!
Rahan leaves you to your stupid beliefs!
When the sun rises, you will only have your lamentations to offer Gahou!

As for you, you forced Rahan to undergo terrible ordeals!
But Rahan warn you.
If you tell him to return to this cursed territory, he will disobey you!

The knife turned for a moment on the stone skin.
His blade designated the river of fire.
No! No! No!

But the weapon, very slowly, made another half-turn.
The blade, this time, was aimed towards the green forest!
Ra-ha-ha!

Rahan's clamor awakened distant echoes.
As the darkness dissipated behind the forest, he set off joyfully to meet the day.
A day such that he would almost never see again!
