House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) rebuked former President Donald Trump’s guilty verdict in his hush money trial, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the legal process and vowing legislative action to “defend the integrity of the system itself.” His thoughts were echoed by House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (NY), Majority Whip Tom Emmer (MN), and Majority Leader Steve Scalise (LA). Moreover, Speaker Johnson said the federal prosecution of President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, for gun charges did not change his opinion that the criminal justice system was politically weaponized under President Biden. During this news conference on Capitol Hill, House Republican leadership also discussed President Biden’s executive order for the southern border, a veterans bill, and legislation that sanctions the International Criminal Court for issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders for war crimes.
