The Dipper, scientifically known as Cinclus cinclus, is a plump brown bird found across Britain. These birds are unusual as they can swim and walk underwater, using their wings to propel themselves along river beds in search of insect larvae and freshwater shrimps. Dippers nest beside fast-flowing streams and rivers, building domed nests from moss and leaves. During summer, the male has a dazzling white throat and breast. In winter, their plumage is more subdued. Dippers are monogamous and often mate for life. Remarkably, they can survive being completely submerged in freezing water for up to 30 seconds while foraging.
