Nigeria can be a very strange place. Conditions are so harsh in so many ways that survival becomes a virtue. Apathy in the face of injustice is thus often lauded as a very reasonable survival tactic.

But should any of this be surprising to us? According to Olasupo Shasore a lawyer and the presenter of Journey of an African Colony on Netflix, 23% of black people taken away from the continent came from Nigeria, especially Southern Nigeria.

The transatlantic slave trade carried on for 400 years but before that, we had the trans-Arabic slave trade for over 1,300. Some will argue that both are still going on covertly to this day. It is a fact, however, that Nigeria remains a covert British colony. The British government continues to rule indirectly through the use of surveillance and the network of contracts.

In this environment, it is very rare for Nigerians to stick their heads above the parapet and speak truth to power. While I don’t agree with some of the points in this video, especially about the motivation of Biafrans to exit Nigeria, I am grateful to Dr Gideon Isa for speaking up.
