Dakota Johnson's latest movie Am I OK? has finally dropped its first trailer after first premiering at Sundance two years ago.

Directed by real-life couple Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne, this "very awkward, honest" and "sometimes embarrassing" true story follows Johnson's character Lucy, who, after some catastrophic encounters with guys, comes to the realisation that she's a lesbian.

The comedy-drama is set to premiere on streaming service Max on June 6.

House of the Dragon's Sonoya Mizuno plays Lucy's best friend Jane, who tells her in the trailer: "You try 20 different flavours of ice cream before you settle on a single scoop..."

"Ice cream is different than vagina," Lucy replies dryly, as she struggles to leave her shell.

Also featured in the cast are Will & Grace favourite Sean Hayes, A Murder at the End of the World's Jermaine Fowler, The Flash's Kiersey Clemons and The Bear star Molly Gordon.

Back in March, Johnson weighed in on the critical pile-on experienced by her first superhero blockbuster Madame Web, which eventually became a Netflix hit.

"Unfortunately, I'm not surprised that this has gone down the way it has," said the actor when the brutal reviews first came out.

"It's so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made — and it's even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what's really freaking me out — decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it's made by committee," she said.

"My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they're not. Audiences will always be able to sniff out bullshit."

Am I OK? begins streaming on Max from Thursday, June 6.
HBO has released a trailer for for the Dakota Johnson drama Am I Ok?, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival over two years ago.

I’m not sure why the film has been sitting around gathering dust, but the movie will finally be released on June 6th. The movie also stars Sonoya Mizuno, Jermaine Fowler, Kiersey Clemons, Molly Gordon, and Sean Hayes.

In the film, “Lucy (Johnson) and Jane (Mizuno) have been best friends for most of their lives and think they know everything there is to know about each other. But when Jane announces she’s moving to London, Lucy reveals a long-held secret. As Jane tries to help Lucy, their friendship is thrown into chaos.”

The film comes from comedian Tig Notaro, who also stars in the film, and her wife Stephanie Allynne. They are making their directorial debut.

Fans have finally been given the first trailer for the lesbian film Am I OK? featuring Dakota Johnson, who plays a “baby gay” in the movie.

The actor recently appeared in the superhero film Madame Web – which was a flop according to reviews and box office ratings – and we’re sure that both Johnson and fans alike are relieved to see the star returning to rom-coms with her upcoming film, Am I OK?

The long-awaited lesbian movie is set to appear on the streaming platform Max this summer and is co-directed by Tig Notaro and her wife Stephanie Allynne.

Am I OK? sees Johnson as Lucy, a 30-something-year-old who exclusively dates men, but can’t figure out why she never quite feels connected to them.

The trailer sees the character finally undertaking the queer initiation rite of an online “Am I a lesbian?” quiz (we’ve all been there), before confiding in her best friend Jane (Sonoya Mizuno) as Lucy finally accepts her identity as a “baby gay”.

“You did want a Volvo in high school,” Jane quips in the trailer after Lucy comes out.

“Volvo’s are the safest car!”, Lucy responds.

Elsewhere in the trailer, Lucy opens up about struggling to date in her newfound lesbian identity. “I’m nervous all the time, and I’m scared of everything,” she says before we eventually catch a glimpse of the pair appearing to dance with non-binary Grey’s Anatomy star E.R. Fightmaster.

The movie is based on a true story; that which is close to screenwriter Lauren Pomerantz’s own coming-out story. “I took my whole coming out late story and I used that, and I really based [Am I OK?] on a real-life friendship with my best friend Jessica [Elbaum], who is also a producer on this movie,” Pomerantz told Entertainment Weekly.

“We had sort of a big fight, and then we’re friends again, but then simultaneously, I was struggling to come out. And so I realized that was the story that I really wanted to tell.”

Dakota Johnson stars as a closeted lesbian entering the queer dating pool in Am I Ok?, a dramedy set to arrive June 6 on Max. Am I Ok?, a film directed by married duo Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne, traces the close friendship between Lucy (Johnson) and Jane (Sonoya Mizuno), and the hysteria that ensues after the two reveal life-changing secrets. Jane announces that she’s moving from Los Angeles to London for a work opportunity, and Lucy, after toying with a “How to know if you’re a lesbian” online quiz, realizes she gay at age 32.

In the new trailer, socially awkward Lucy undergoes her sexual awakening, she evades any signs of male affection, and dodges questions around sexual partners or match-making. The late bloomer spends most of the clip in crisis, where in one moment Lucy admits she’s fine and in the next she’s sobbing on a public toilet.

In an effort to give dating advice, Jane gives her some advice: “You try 20 different flavors of ice cream before you settle on a single scoop.” Lucy responds, “Ice cream is different than vagina,” later adding, “Otherwise it would be called vag-ice cream.”

The film, which premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, stars Jermaine Fowler, Kiersey Clemons, Molly Gordon, Sean Hayes, and Notaro, and is loosely based on the coming out story of the film’s writer, Lauren Pomerantz.

Johnson recently starred in the panned Marvel film Madame Web, which received criticism for its poor visuals, lifeless dialogue, and trailer scenes that were later removed from the film. In an interview about the film, Johnson shared it’s a project she’d never do again.

Dakota Johnson is asking herself what we all have at one time or another: “Am I OK?”

Johnson stars in the simply titled feature that premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Tig Notaro co-directs with her wife and fellow comedian Stephanie Allynne from a semi-autobiographical script written by Lauren Pomerantz.

Johnson stars as 30something Lucy who realizes she is a lesbian just as her best friend Jane (Sonoya Mizuno) announces she’s moving from Los Angeles to London for work. As Lucy’s life is upended, she’s suddenly floating through a queer dating pool without the life raft of Jane.

Jermaine Fowler, Kiersey Clemons, Molly Gordon, and Sean Hayes also star, along with co-director Notaro.

Screenwriter Pomerantz told Entertainment Weekly that “Am I OK?” began as a “friendship movie” centered on her actual best friend Jessica Elbaum, who serves as a producer on the film. However, the feature became a coming-out dramedy instead.

“I took my whole coming out late story, and I used that, and I really based it on a real-life friendship with my best friend Jessica [Elbaum], who is also a producer on this movie,” Pomerantz said. “I started writing it as a friendship movie based on our friendship. We had sort of a big fight, and then we’re friends again, but then simultaneously, I was struggling to come out. And so I realized that was the story that I really wanted to tell.”

The IndieWire review credited Johnson’s “very charming comedic turn” for being a highlight of the film.

“While Lucy’s journey — coming to terms with one’s sexuality beyond the usual coming-of-age story is not something we normally see onscreen, particularly with such comedic trappings — is a tough one, Johnson keeps Lucy grounded, relatable, and someone you can’t help but cheer for,” critic Kate Erbland penned. “Johnson is aces at this open-hearted comedy stuff, just as appealing when she’s falling off a bed to literally avoid a man as she is repeatedly sobbing over the state of her life (Dakota Johnson: wonderful onscreen crier). ‘Am I OK?’ sweetly champions the power of strong female friendships, it also understand something essential: If you don’t like yourself, having a BFF who adores you is really only half the battle.”

“Am I OK?” premieres June 6 on Max. Check out the trailer below.
