Can You Reuse an Old Canvas Without Priming It?

Can you paint over a used canvas without priming it first? Let's test it. I got this snowman painting from the free section of the Reuse center.

I've gotten multiple questions on my earlier canvas reusing video about whether you could just paint a white layer over the old painting instead of priming it with acrylic gesso. So, I'll prime half of this used canvas with gesso and just paint the other half a solid color with acrylic paints as a basis for the new painting and let's see what happens.
