Playful Horse Loves Taking Showers In The Sprinklers

This video is somewhat surprising to us because our experiences with horses have always been with horses that do NOT like bath time. Of course, the difference here is that this horse is giving herself a bath and then doing a horse’s favorite activity, rolling! Maybe horses only like baths if they do it themselves. Who knew? Still, look at how happy this mare as she takes her personal shower. She even tries to make sure she cleans all her sides before she goes on her grass roll.

If you did not know horses do need baths from time to time. Too much bathing, however, can make for a damaged coat. It is similar to how if you bathe with shampoo too much it can damage your hair. Too many bathes can make horse hair dry which can attract more dirt and grime. Most people who own horses bath them in a fairly similar manner. You get a decent sized bucket with warm water, some sponges and a scraper. The scraper is to help pull off sweat and water so that the horse does not overheat. However, we have read some myths about using cold water to bathe horses. We don’t have a solid opinion on that though.

So why do horses like roll around after a bath or just in general. Horses tend to roll for four different reasons. The first one is obvious, horses just enjoy it. It is a fun and pleasurable event for them. They also do it as a form of grooming and self-maintenance especially if they need to knock something off. Another way they do it is to relieve pain or discomfort. It’s kind of like a person trying to rub out a knot. The last way is to get some rest after standing on their legs all day.
