On Saturday, May 4, 2024, about 7:45 p.m., Aurora patrol officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Clinton Street after multiple callers reported hearing sounds of gunfire and that a man had sustained a nonfatal gunshot wound to the leg. The suspect, 28-year-old Aurora resident, Jose Luis Rodriguez-Balderrama, left the scene in a red Ford Mustang. Prior to arriving at the scene, officers observed the Mustang in the area and engaged in a brief pursuit, which ended when officers lost sight of the vehicle.

As officers attempted to stop the fleeing suspect, additional officers responded to the original scene. Officers located the victim, a 29-year-old Aurora man, who said Rodriguez-Balderrama arrived at his apartment earlier that evening. Rodriguez-Balderrama was a friend who had been sitting on the victim’s couch with a gun pointed at his own head. The victim told officers he and another resident ran out of the apartment after Rodriguez-Balderrama produced the handgun. The victim said Rodriguez-Balderrama fired several shots at him, striking him in the leg. The other male resident was not injured. A motive for the shooting is not yet known and is part of the ongoing investigation.

While the victim was speaking with officers, several neighbors began yelling that Rodriguez-Balderrama had returned to the scene. Officers quickly located Rodriguez-Balderrama standing near the victim’s apartment, still armed with a handgun. Officers gave Rodriguez-Balderrama commands to show them his hands, at which point officers fired their handguns. Rodriguez-Balderrama was struck multiple times. A 40-caliber handgun was recovered at the scene. Aurora Fire Rescue arrived at the scene and immediately performed lifesaving actions on Rodriguez-Balderrama. Rodriguez-Balderrama was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
