One of the horror movies on our radar for SXSW 2024 this month is the Australian film Birdeater, which has received an official teaser trailer ahead of the festival this week.

Birdeater, which premiered at the Sydney Film Festival and earned the Audience Award for Australian Narrative Feature, is set to make its International Premiere at SXSW.

Directed by the filmmaking duo Jack Clark and Jim Weir, Birdeater is said to be a “horror thriller that represents a visually striking and daring debut from this Australian duo.”

“A bride-to-be is invited to join her own fiancé’s bachelor party on a remote property in the Australian outback. But as the festivities spiral into beer-soaked chaos, uncomfortable details about their relationship are exposed, and the celebration soon becomes a feral nightmare.”

Shabana Azeez, Mackenzie Fearnley, Ben Hunter, Jack Bannister, Clementine Anderson, Alfie Gledhill, Harley Wilson, and Caroline McQuade star in Birdeater.

Jack Clark wrote the screenplay. Stephanie Troost and Ulysses Oliver produced, with executive producers including Ben Ferris, Chris Thompson, Jack Stephens, Jack Clark, and Jim Weir.

Stay tuned for our SXSW 2024 reviews, which begin later this week.
Silent Hill movie director Christophe Gans returns to the franchise with Return to Silent Hill, set to be a brand new film adaptation of Silent Hill 2. Watch the teaser trailer below!

This first look teaser for Return to Silent Hill reveals Jeremy Irvine as video game character James Sunderland, while teasing the various threats he’ll be facing in Silent Hill.

Those threats include Pyramid Head and the Nurses, both glimpsed in this first trailer!

“The film will follow James (Jeremy Irvine), a man broken after being separated from his one true love (Hannah Emily Anderson). When a mysterious letter calls him back to Silent Hill in search of her, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil.

“As James descends deeper into the darkness, he encounters terrifying figures both familiar and new and begins to question his own sanity as he struggles to make sense of reality and hold on long enough to save his lost love.”

“Return to Silent Hill is a mythological love story about someone so deeply in love, they’re willing to go to hell to save someone,” said director Gans. “I’m delighted to have the wonderful talents of both Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson take us on this journey into a psychological horror world that I hope will both satisfy and surprise fans of Silent Hill.”

“Christophe and I have been working closely with our partners at Konami, as they update the video game, to also create a version of Silent Hill for the theatrical audiences of today,” explained producer Victor Hadida. “You will still find the iconic monsters – but there will also be new designs. We are confident that this new film and Konami’s updated game together will propel the franchise forward for years to come.”

Gans wrote the script alongside Sandra Vo-Anh and William Josef Schneider.

Victor Hadida (The Crow, Silent Hill franchises) will produce under his Davis Films banner, with Hassell Free Productions’ Molly Hassell (The Crow) and David Wulf (The Card Counter).

This will be the third official Silent Hill live action movie, coming in the wake of the Gans-directed Silent Hill in 2006 and 2012 sequel Silent Hill: Revelation, directed by M.J. Bassett.
Independent Australian psychological thriller Birdeater has secured a release date in national cinemas of 18 July, with the trailer and poster released simultaneously by distributor Umbrella.

Birdeater is the debut film of first-time directors Jack Clark and Jim Weir, who saw the darkly comedic film sell out sessions at SXSW Austin, MIFF and Cinefest Oz, before winning the Audience Award for Best Australian Narrative Feature at 2023 Sydney Film Festival.

The film follows a nervous bride-to-be (Shabana Azeez) who is invited to her own fiancé’s (Mackenzie Fearnley) Buck’s Party. When uncomfortable details about their relationship are exposed, the celebration night takes a turn for the feral (indeed, the film has been described using that word by many a critic).

‘Taking inspiration from Australian new wave cinema, Birdeater is an unapologetic look at how Australia’s iconic masculinity identity has become incompatible with contemporary gender politics,’ reads the official press release. ‘Bringing outback cinema to the North Shore private schoolboy, it comments on co-dependency in both romantic relationships and platonic friendships in an iconic bush location peppered with nangs, joyrides and ketamine.’

Birdeater is produced by Breathless Films, a company established by Ulysses Oliver and Ben Ferris in 2020.

‘Told from the Australian male perspective, the story draws us in to feel like one of the boys, only to turn and make us feel culpable,’ said Ulysses Oliver.’ This film is not just an entertaining, feral, genre-bending joyride; it’s a necessary conversation to foster understanding and change.’

‘We’ve been amazed to see our film resonate so deeply with audiences around the world, despite being so specific to Australia,’ Directors Jim Clark and Jack Weir said. ‘Birdeater is an intense, wild, and challenging film, and we’re delighted to finally be screening in Aussie cinemas.’

Birdeater is in cinemas from 18 July 2024.
"Should we really be doing that? Shouldn't you just stop now?" Blue Finch Films has revealed a fantastic festival teaser trailer for a new film titled Birdeater, an Australian indie horror flick marking the feature directorial debut of filmmakers Jack Clark & Jim Weir. It first premiered at the 2023 Sydney Film Festival last year and won the Audience Award for Australian Narrative Feature there. And it's screening at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival coming up in March. Birdeater is an unsettling new thriller that "represents a visually striking and daring debut from this Australian duo." A bride-to-be is invited to her fiancé's bachelor party, but when uncomfortable details of their relationship are exposed, the night takes a feral turn. So vague yet compelling. With Shabana Azeez, Mackenzie Fearnley, Ben Hunter, Jack Bannister, Clementine Anderson, Alfie Gledhill, Harley Wilson, and Caroline McQuade. Oh damn – yeah this looks quite good, even from just this first 30 seconds of footage so far. I'm quite curious to find out what's going down...

A bride-to-be is invited to join her own fiancé’s bachelor party on a remote property in the Australian outback. But as the festivities spiral into beer-soaked chaos, uncomfortable details about their relationship are exposed, and the celebration soon becomes a feral nightmare. Birdeater is co-directed by Australian filmmakers Jack Clark & Jim Weir, both making their feature directorial debut after a few other short films and projects previously. The screenplay is written by Jack Clark. It's produced by Stephanie Troost & Ulysses Oliver. The film first premiered at the 2023 Sydney Film Festival in July last year. It's also playing at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival this month in the Visions section. No other release dates are set yet - stay tuned for updates. You can also follow the film on Instagram. Cinema Australia can exclusively reveal that Jack Clark and Jim Weir’s surreal psychological thriller, Birdeater, will screen at the Revelation Perth International Film Festival this July.

Birdeater will then release in Australian cinemas from July 18, with the official trailer and poster being released today via Umbrella Entertainment.

Launching from its festival success in sell out sessions at SXSW Austin, Melbourne International Film Festival and CinefestOZ to a glowing critical response and receiving the Audience Award for Best Australian Narrative Feature at Sydney Film Festival, Birdeater is set to thrill with a classic Australian aesthetic and iconography.

Taking inspiration from Australian new wave cinema, Birdeater is an unapologetic look at how Australia’s iconic masculinity identity has become incompatible with contemporary gender politics. Birdeater is produced by Breathless Films, a company established by Ulysses Oliver and Ben Ferris in 2020 as a response to the lack of support for independent and emerging filmmakers in Australia. Breathless Films serves as a platform for a new wave of diverse, indie spirited feature films. Their first film, Lonesome, was nominated for an AACTA Award for Best Indie Film in 2022.

Ulysses Oliver has said, “Told from the Australian male perspective, the story draws us in to feel like one of the boys, only to turn and make us feel culpable. This film is not just an entertaining, feral, genre-bending joyride; it’s a necessary conversation to foster understanding and change.”

Also producing the film is Stephanie Troost, who commented: “Birdeater tells a gripping story that delves into the complex nature of toxic masculinity and the more insidious ways it hides within social circles. It not only reveals this, but it asks questions of all those that ignore it. This is a story that challenges the morals of all the characters, and that is what drew me into the script.”

Directors Jim Clark and Jack Weir have said, “We’ve been amazed to see our film resonate so deeply with audiences around the world, despite being so specific to Australia. Birdeater is an intense, wild, and challenging film, and we’re delighted to finally be screening in Aussie cinemas.”
