North Korean state media has published footage of military exercises involving nuclear-capable rocket launchers at an undisclosed location. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported the drill on Friday, commenting that the tests are meant to demonstrate North Korea’s resolve and ability to preemptively strike its neighbors to the south, if threatened.

The drills are thought to be the same ballistic missile test launches detected by South Korea on Thursday, while experts say North Korea’s large artillery rockets blur the boundaries between artillery systems and short-range ballistic missiles, because, unlike conventional artillery shells, these rockets are self-propelled and self-guided.

KCNA also accused South Korea of staging a ‘clumsy counteraction of a dangerous armed demonstration against the exercise of legitimate sovereign right’ of North Korea, likely referring to an aerial exercise performed shortly before Pyongyang’s failed spy satellite launch earlier in the week.
