The Phoenix Police Department has released body-camera video of when an officer shot and killed a homicide suspect in north Phoenix earlier this month.

Officers first responded to a shooting near 33rd and Northern avenues on May 16. That’s where they found 29-year-old Brandon Russell shot. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and later died from his injuries.

At that scene, police learned that Russell and 23-year-old Devin Montgomery were involved in an argument just before the shooting and Montgomery ran away from the scene, investigators said.

Detectives then tracked him down at an apartment complex near 25th Avenue and Cactus Road around 4:45 p.m.

At the complex, an officer first spotted Montgomery trying to speak with someone there, but was unsuccessful.

That officer, who was in an unmarked police vehicle, reportedly saw two handguns in Montgomery’s hand when he arrived.

The video shows that the suspect appears to fire multiple rounds toward the officer’s patrol vehicle before running away.

The edited video shows that the officer then chases Montgomery as police say he continues firing rounds.

A few moments later, Montgomery is seen falling to the ground as it appears the officer shot him.

No audio of that initial gunfire was captured because the body-worn camera wasn’t fully activated until the officer detained that suspect, investigators said.

Police say that officers then tended medically to Montgomery before he was rushed to a nearby hospital. He later died from his injuries.

Police also showed the two handguns that Montgomery allegedly had when he was detained.
