"Curtain of fire": Iceland volcano erupts, spewing fountains of lava into air
A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted again on Wednesday, spewing red-hot fountains of lava 50 metres into the air, triggering the evacuation of the popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa and the town of Grindavik.
The fissure where the eruption is happening is still elongating, like a "curtain of fire" around 2 km long so far, Rikke Pedersen, leader of the Nordic Volcanological Centre at the University of Iceland said.
The fiery spectacle underlines the challenges faced by the island nation of almost 400,000 people as scientists have warned that repeated eruptions are possible in Reykjanes for decades or even centuries.
