New Zealand's Dr Andrew Old informs the World Health Assembly that the 2005 International Health Regulations (IHRs) are not good enough for pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. Core capacities for prevention and surveillance will need WHO support to enable better country implementation, and most importantly to ensure that the regulations are grounded in equity and solidarity. New Zealand is proud of the progress we have collectively made towards these goals. We are close ... so close ... to agreeing a package of amendments that will fulfil the mandate of the working group, and help keep the world safe from future public health emergencies. Further, success on the IHRs this week will help pave the way for successful conclusion of a pandemic agreement as soon as possible ... New Zealand remains fully committed to achieving consensus this week on a package of IHR amendments that harness the lessons from Covid-19 and that help us prevent, prepare for and respond to future pandemics.

This week another public health physician, Dr David Bell, authored an article titled "Tedros Must Face Reality", in which he argues that the World Health Organization are divorced from reality and have become dangerous, focusing on pandemics which pose little risk to humanity and depleting resources from health programs which matter the most for human health.
