Israeli strike on Rafah triggers UN emergencymeeting | BBC News

The UN Security Council will hold an emergencymeeting later on Tuesday to discuss Israel's strike onthe southern Gazan city of Rafah on Sunday.

At least 45 people were killed, according to theHamas-run health ministry, while hundreds more weretreated for severe burns, fractures and shrapnel wounds.

Israeli strikes in Rafah have continued despite thedozens killed in Sunday's bombing.

Israel's PM Benjamin Netanyahu said the strike was a"tragic mishap" but added: "I don't intend to end thewar before every goal has been achieved."

Last week, the EU asked Israel to "fully respect" aruling by the International Court of Justice that Israelstop military actions on Rafah "which may inflict on thePalestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that couldbring about its physical destruction in whole or in part".
