Head On Collision/Car Fire and Amazing Rescue, WEST TEMPE, May 28, 2024 - At approximately 12:25 pm on May 28, 2024, the driver of a gray Nissan Versa was west bound on US-190 West when the driver of an east-bound Ford Freestyle (suv) crossed the center line causing a head on collision. The Ford ignited and caught fire. Deputy Randy Burns with the Polk County Sheriff's Office (first emergency responder on the scene), was able to help the driver of the Ford exit his burning vehicle. The driver of the Nissan was trapped and unconcious (doors jammed from the collision). By now, the Ford was engulfed in flames. With the danger of the fire possibly spreading to the Nissan (with the entrapped, unconcious driver), Corporal Ramey Bass with the Texas Highway Patrol, arrived and used his vehicle to push the Nissan away from the Ford in order to prevent both vehicles from igniting. Livingston Volunteer Fire Department arrived and put the fire out. Both drivers (names not yet released) were transported by ambulance to CHI Livingston Memorial Hospital. The driver of the Ford's injuries are not life threatening, while the driver of the Nissan was in critical condition. All traffic on 190 was blocked during investigation and cleanup. The Ford was recovered by Fawbush Wrecker Service out of Goodrich, while the Nissan was recovered by Kwik Tow out of Livingston. This accident remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol. We'll update this story when names are released.
