The lion-tailed macaque is an endangered primate endemic to the Western Ghats of South India, and Valparai is one of the places where you can spot them. These macaques are known for their thick mane of hair around their face, which resembles a lion's mane, hence their name.

Unfortunately, due to habitat loss, lion-tailed macaques are classified as endangered. However, Valparai offers a haven for these primates, with at least 12 troops and over 150 individuals found in rainforest fragments within the area's tea plantations.
