A fundraiser for artillery units, Pavlo Narozhnyi, says most soldiers he meets are around 40-45. Young soldiers, especially under 30, are uncommon. A senior military official confirms this, stating the average soldier's age is around 43-45.
Ukrainian law has traditionally protected younger men from the draft, with conscription only targeting those over 27. This was recently lowered to 25, but mobilizing these younger men is proving difficult.
Sending young Ukrainians to fight is unpopular, and there's a belief they're crucial for rebuilding the country in the future. Lawmaker Serhiy Rakhmanin, on the security and defense committee, explains this reasoning.
