Despite some recent backlash, football remains one of America’s most popular sports with thousands of kids around the country playing in leagues from little kids all the way on up to college ball. The most popular league in the country is run by the Pop Warner organization is almost synonymous with childhood football. Not that the two kids in this video care since they are dealing with the fact that their football helmets are stuck together from a tackling drill. It’s an intimate relationship.

We grew up with Pop Warner as we’re sure you did too, but did you know that Pop Warner has been around since 1929. It was originally started by a man named Joseph Tomlin in an attempt to get teenagers to stop breaking windows with rocks in Northeast Philadelphia. In 1933, the league he started had 16 teams. He invited legendary college coach Glenn Scobie “Pop” Warner to give a lecture to the kids with other coaches. However, Warner was the only coach to show up to the event. So, he spent hours talking to the kids and answering their questions.

In the end, the kids and parents loved Warner so much that they got the organization renamed to the Pop Warner Conference. Today the organization is called the Pop Warner Little Scholars. It’s expanded to more than just football and also offers mentorship programs for the kids. According to their website, there are over 5,000 football teams across America and in countries like Mexico and Japan. It is interesting to us that the organization has lasted for almost 90 years and appears to still be going strong. We wonder if it will make it to the century mark.
