In Revelation 3:20, Jesus warns the church of Laodice, one of the seven Asian churches, to open its doors and sup with anyone who hears his voice. The church, once a famous city, was built on seven hills and had a council in the fourth century. The apostle Paul was instrumental in planting the gospel in this city, and it is an awful monument of the wrath of the Lamb. Jesus declares that He is the Amen, the faithful and true witness, and the beginning of creation. He is the Creator, Governor, and head of the second creation, the church. Christ knows us better than ourselves and asks the church of Laodice to be neither cold nor hot, but worse than either. He asks why halting between two opinions is necessary, and why there is no room for neutrality. He expects men to declare their love or hate for Him, and hate involves a threatened severe punishment. Lukeewarm followers of Christ are sick and cannot bear them very long.
