Look, this is a great video. Any time you see adults get dizzy and try to hit piñatas…that’s just going to be a highlight your day. At least, it is for us. Large people trying to play children’s games always crack us up. That said, we stumbled across some interesting history about the piñata that we want to share with you! It is really fun and it’ll be one of those interesting facts that you can drop at trivia games or parties. And really isn’t that the most important thing?

Traditionally, the piñata is associated with Mexico, and falls under the Mexican art of “cartoneria” which refers to items made from paper and/or cardboard. Most piñatas today are made from either cardboard and paper or papier Mache mix. However, there is history that suggests that the Mexican piñata is a mixture of old Chinese traditions and Aztec and Maya traditions. Both revolved around filling clay jars or pots with seeds (Chinese) or offerings like fruit (Aztecs, and the Mayans). According to some history books, Marco Polo brought the idea of piñatas back to Italy when he returned from China.

The custom was exported from Italy to Spain. Researchers believe that the Italian word pignatta (which means clay pot) became the Spanish word piñata. We could not find any information on what the Chinese called their early versions of the piñata. When the Spanish conquistadores went to the Americas they discovered that the Aztecs had a similar tradition. So, converters used that the shared traditions to help convert American Natives to Christianity. Today, piñatas have become a symbol of Hispanic and Latin American communities in the United States while also being a common party game for many different races and peoples.
