Natural Health Products In The Spotlight: Key Takeaways From The House Debate

On May 22, 2024, the House of Commons reconvened to continue the second reading of Bill C-368, aimed at amending the Food and Drugs Act concerning natural health products (NHPs). The hour-long debate featured passionate speeches from members of all major political parties.

The Bloc Québécois, represented by MP Caroline Desbiens, and the NDP, represented by MP Alistair MacGregor, both voiced strong support, emphasizing the need for balanced regulation that preserves consumer access.

Conversely, as expected, Liberal MPs defended the current stringent oversight under Vanessa’s Law to "protect" Canadians.

Conservative MPs Blaine Calkins and Michelle Ferreri framed the debate as an issue of consumer health freedom and criticized the government for overreaching regulatory measures that could potentially stifle small businesses and harm the health of Canadians.

With the vote for Bill C-368 scheduled for May 29, 2024, there’s still time to engage your MP on this critical issue. Send an electronic letter today 👇
