Usury & The Old World

**This is Good and we should know a brief history of Interest and Banking. This is a great intro to usury and to think how Christianity used to be so dead set against it.

Today, we have the Federal Reserve and the global elite bankers controlling the world with Usury.

What happened? How did we stray so far from compassion and morality?

Summary:

Non-Polytheistic Religions like Christianity do not agree with Usury. Usury is basically a fee attached to borrowing money, interest rates.

Lending anything and wanting the Principal back with Interest is Usury.

Then there is lending something and expecting WAY more back than the original principal.

In Ancient Egypt they charged high usury fees, 40% would be a good rate.

Hinduism – they did not like anything above 2% usury fees.

Ancient Greeks – normal loans were fair rates, like modern loans, they did all kinds of loans, banks lending banks, commerce and industry were the highest and most expensive loans. They had hard bargain loans, which were as high as 100% loans. The loans were a government option to allow money into the system.

Secular Romans – inherited the same Greek concepts. The Republic of Rome in the 400 to 43 BC – you saw the lowest rates. The highest rates were when the Empire of Rome kicked in.

Plato and Aristotle argued for NO Usury at all. They argued you cannot use the Means of Exchange to making money.

It might be a great way, an easy way to make money, but it is not moral, it is immoral. Nothing is gained from it in any way. It is unproductive. The exchange itself has no productive value. Nothing is created.

When usury fees go up, you see LESS Productivity, they are “slowing” an economy down.

To gain from 0% Productivity is called STEALING.

What about the Jews during the Temple Period through the Middle Ages?

Lending was BAD. They didn’t like it at all. Were totally against it. Until they started to get integrated into European Culture. This was called the Jewish Diaspora.

Jewish Diaspora – the dispersion of Jews among the Gentiles after the Babylonian Exile or the aggregate of Jews or Jewish communities scattered “in exile” outside Palestine or present-day Israel.

After this they had the concept that they could use interest for Non-Jews, but they were limited due to the Torah had limitations on borrowing and lending.

Hebrew meaning of Usury – is blood bite.

In the old Jewish narrative they were trying to actually protect those who borrow.

They were allowed to lend to Non-Jews outside of the Temple.

What is the Muslim View on Usury? NONE. They do NOT believe in it at all. ZERO. Nada.

The Quran said usury was about Excess and Greed. It is not allowed. You do not manipulate the “needy.”

Unlike today, it is all about making everyone NEED and then manipulating the hell out them and taking all their lifetime earnings through usury.

In the Quran Law – you are disobeying God’s command when you lend with interest.

What were Christian views on Usury?

The east and the west, both the Roman Catholics and the Western Orthodox Christians started out not allowing it at all.

In the 4th Century the Church Prohibited taking interest by the clergy.

In the West in the 7th and 8th centuries they pressed it even further as they made it a “Criminal Offense.”

YES! How it should be.

If you lend a cow and wanted two cows back, that was a crime.

The Anti-Usury continued and gained momentum in the West. By 1311, Pope Clement V totally BANNED Usury.

Pope Clement V voided any laws that even mentioned that usury could be ok in certain situations.

The Orthodox Christians of the East, known as Romans, went back and forth, they knew it was wrong but every once in a while they would do as an Emperor didn’t enforce laws against it.

Emperor Justinian supported the Roman Tradition of Lending at Interest but he declared a Caveat that said the Pre-Christian Romans were lending at too high of rates of 12% and he said you can’t lend higher than 8%, with the Preference of lending at 4%.

The only ones he allowed to lend higher than 4% were BANKERS.

Why?

Because he used them to Rebuild and Reclaim the Roman Empire. This was in the 500’s.

Government workers were not allowed to capitalize on interest rates.

Artemius was a general in the roman empire and came from a family who made their fortunes on usury but he was vehemently against it and he became a Saint.

John Chrysostom – golden mouth – he said bankers attach interest to interest and pursue by the way of inequity any money they can get their hands on.

St. Gregory of Nyssa – says a man in need of a loan should be given the loan and not even be expected to receive the principal back. Whoa.

His philosophy was lending without demanding anything back at all. He said an Interest Free Loan is the second degree of charity.

He said the first degree of charity is just giving or lending with no desire of receiving anything in return.

St. Greggory of Nyssa – the lender was the guy who pimped out his money.

If you had money you should not lend but you should help others by giving them some of it and expecting nothing in return.

So how did we get where we are today?
