Amazon MGM Studios has released the trailer for the comedy film “You’re Cordially Invited,” starring Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell.

Per the official logline, “A woman (Witherspoon) planning her sister’s (Meredith Hagner) perfect wedding and the father (Ferrell) of a young bride-to-be (Geraldine Viswanathan) find out that they are double booked for their destination wedding at a remote resort on an island off the Georgia coast. When both parties decide to share the small venue, chaos ensues and disaster awaits.”

The trailer features scenes of Ferrell and Witherspoon’s characters getting involved in chaotic situations, including a moment when Ferrell is wrestling an alligator in a hotel room.

“If I look out on that dock and that bride’s not my baby girl, that bride’s going in the fucking lake,” Ferrell says in the trailer. “Splish splash, bitch, taking a bath.”

“I’m gonna kick your ass, and it’s gonna be embarassing,” Witherspoon replies, “because you’re big and I’m little.”

Along with Witherspoon and Ferrell, the cast includes Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hagner, Jimmy Tatro, Stony Blyden, Leanne Morgan, Rory Scovel, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Ramona Young, Jack McBrayer and Celia Weston.

“You’re Cordially Invited” is written and directed by Nicholas Stoller. You're Cordially Invited is written and directed by Nicholas Stoller, who brought comedies Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Neighbors and Bros to the big screen.

The trailer shows glimpses of Witherspoon and Ferrell’s costars, which include Celia Weston, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Leanne Morgan, Stony Blyden, Rory Scovel, Ramona Young and Jimmy Tatro. Jack McBrayer plays the resort concierge who reveals the mix-up at the island off the Georgia coast.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar last year, Witherspoon reflected on starring in and producing comedies like You’re Cordially Invited and her 2023 Ashton Kutcher rom-com Your Place or Mine. “I think the human capacity to handle as much heartbreak and tragedy that’s happened in the world is really diminished,” she said at the time.

“I think of opportunities to make movies and television shows that are joyful, optimistic, funny … I think about what I want to see on a Friday night, and while I can appreciate a true-crime show or a podcast, I really need some levity. I think the world is looking for a little brightness.”

Morgan, a comedian who like Witherspoon hails from Tennessee, told PEOPLE in September that everyone on her first feature film “answered my questions. They were so sweet and uplifting. I fell in love with everybody on that set, from the craftsmen that were cooking, to the little PAs.”

Witherspoon, “a living doll,” added Morgan, suggested her for the role of her older sister. “That little thing believes in me.”

But with a comedy heavyweight like Ferrell to play against and a veteran writer-director at the helm, we’re optimistic that this could be actually funny, cute, and fun. Like Anyone but You, but for grown-ups! If nothing else, a Will Ferrell–Reese Witherspoon movie is safe to watch with your parents.

The first look dropped Tuesday, May 14! It doesn’t seem to tease any chemistry between Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon’s characters, but it also doesn’t give either one of them a partner, so we’re going to place our bets that these two end up, at the very least, flirty friends.
