At least 5 killed, dozens injured by Iowa tornadoes as powerful storms slam Midwest

At least five people were killed and dozens injured as powerful tornadoes hit Iowa, particularly devastating the small city of Greenfield, officials said Wednesday.

The tornadoes destroyed homes, businesses, and trees, following a previous series of tornadoes that had already struck other parts of the state.

Nebraska also experienced severe weather, including torrential rain, high winds, and large hail.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety reported four deaths and 35 injuries in Greenfield, with 14 people transported to medical facilities outside Adair County.

A woman in Adams County died when her vehicle was blown off the road by a tornado.

Governor Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation for 15 counties and visited Greenfield to assess the damage, describing the scene as “tragic” and “gut-wrenching.”

The local hospital, among other structures, was damaged, and a search and rescue operation was underway to account for all residents, CBS News reported.
