When faced with adversity, they enter a state called cryptobiosis, where they can survive without water for years. With over 1,300 known species, tardigrades have been roaming the Earth for over 500 million years. Scientists are studying tardigrades to unlock the secrets of their resilience to potentially apply them in medicine, space exploration, and beyond.
