On May 16-17, 2024, a powerful derecho hit the Gulf Coast from Southeast Texas to Florida, severely impacting Houston. The storm, with winds up to 100 mph, caused widespread damage and resulted in 8 fatalities. Houston experienced significant damage, including shattered high-rise windows, collapsed buildings, and extensive power outages affecting over a million residents. The derecho also produced three EF1 tornadoes, further contributing to the destruction across Texas and Louisiana. The storm's impact was the most severe in nearly 25 years for the Houston area.
