Cancer risk assessment, its wretched history and its impact on public health | Prof Edward Calabrese
The linear no-threshold (LNT - https://www.nuclear-power.com/nuclear-engineering/radiation-protection/radiobiology/linear-no-threshold-model/) single-hit dose response model for cancer risk assessment is assessed with respect to its historical foundations.
How did mistakes, ideological biases, and scientific misconduct by key scientists affect the acceptance, validity, and applications of the LNT model for cancer risk assessment. In this discussion, Prof Calabrese demonstrates that the LNT single-hit model was inappropriately adopted for governmental risk assessment, regulatory policy, practices, and risk communication.
Edward J. Calabrese is a Professor of Toxicology at the University of Massachusetts, School of Public Health and Health Sciences, Amherst. Dr. Calabrese has researched extensively in the area of host factors affecting susceptibility to pollutants, and is the author of over 1,000 papers in scholarly journals, as well as more than 10 books.
