Homestead Flood - Dangerous Drivers - 20240517

As I was filming for my mini-documentary on the flooding issue, I caught this on camera. This is the road in front of my homestead. Speed limit is 20MPH on a good, dry day. There is a speed bump in that same location, and the road is narrow enough to easily miss it when you cannot see the road. (NOTE: The entire road is flooded.) This is obviously one of the many contractors that were working in the area. Unfortunately, the motion blur of the frame obscured the logo, but all things considered, I would have probably blurred out the logo anyway. This video is not about getting someone in trouble. This is about cautioning others of how dangerous this kind of driving can be. Let me explain.

I spent 7 years in the 1980's working military law enforcement. In my time, the various units I was assigned apprehended a fair number of drivers for recklessly driving during bad weather. The story was usually the same. One miscalculation can lead to an accident, and sadly, many of these accidents can be fairly serious. If a death occurs in that accident, assuming the investigating agency is competent, the driver who drove recklessly is often charged and convicted with a form of negligent manslaughter...a life ruining felony that will follow the driver for the remainder of their lives. More than once, I had to deliver the bad news to a victim's family who had to endure a tragedy needlessly thrust upon them by a driver who didn't care. It was the most difficult duty I had ever been tasked.

So, this video is meant to say that there is nothing on this earth that makes getting to your next destination a minute sooner worth the gamble.
