It all started on a chilling October night in 2018. At precisely twelve-fifty-three AM, a perplexing nine-one-one call came through. There were no discernible words, just disturbing screams in the background, followed by a sudden disconnect. The call sent authorities racing to the Closs family home. Upon arrival, the first responders were met with a harrowing scene — the front door kicked in, and inside, a sight of unimaginable horror. The lives of Jayme's parents were brutally taken. The house was eerily silent, except for the faint barking of the family dog, signifying the absence of the Closs's thirteen-year-old daughter, Jayme.

The search for Jayme quickly escalated into a race against time. As volunteers scoured the town and held vigils, the nation joined in, watching and hoping for a miracle. But as days stretched into weeks, Jayme remained missing, her fate unknown.

Meanwhile, during those harrowing eighty-eight days, Jayme faced unthinkable conditions in captivity. Far from her home in Barron, she was confined under a bed in a remote cabin in Gordon, Wisconsin. This crude prison, barricaded with weights and laundry bins became her world. So who took her? It was a man named Jake Thomas Patterson.

Patterson was a Wisconsin local who briefly joined the Marine Corps but was discharged after a month. He was described as a shy and quiet person who preferred computer games over social interactions. Prior to the crime, Patterson had no criminal history or direct connections to Jayme or her family. A fleeting moment in September, seeing Jayme get off a school bus, was all it took for Patterson to fixate on her.
