Charles Joseph Whitman, born in 1941, was a complex figure with a normal upbringing. However, the marriage of his parents was characterized by domestic violence. Whitman's father was an admitted authoritarian known to be physically and emotionally abusive towards his wife and children. While he was an excellent and willing provider and had their best interests at heart, he also demanded submission and near perfection from all of them. One neighbor of the Whitmans would later state her parents had called the police numerous times due to Whitman's father beating his wife, children, and even pets.

Despite all this childhood turmoil, Whitman excelled academically, boasting a high IQ and achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at a remarkably young age. He has been described as a polite and extremely intelligent child, and his scholastic achievements were encouraged by both his parents. We can call it encouragement, but Whitman saw it as immense pressure.

Perhaps as a result of this pressure, Charles enlisted in the US Marine Corps without telling his family, and he was deployed to Cuba. His initial military service was likewise excellent, and he earned a sharpshooter's badge and other medals. Two years later, he enrolled at the University of Texas, where he studied mechanical engineering through a government scholarship. Then in August of 1962, he married Kathleen Leissner, a teaching student whom he had met at the university.

While everything seemed to be working fine in Whitman’s life, his marriage and subsequent return to university were overshadowed by growing psychological distress. You see, shortly after his marriage, Charles’ parents announced their divorce — a decision that pushed his mental problems to the edge. This made him seek help from the campus psychiatrist, whose notes provided invaluable insight into the mind of what would become a deadly mass-murderer.
