It’s been over four years since Variety exclusively reported the news that a TV series based on James Patterson’s “Alex Cross” books was in the works. Finally, fans have a first look at Aldis Hodge in the title role.
Amazon released a trailer for “Cross” at its 2024 upfront presentation, during which the company also confirmed previous reports that the series had already scored a Season 2 renewal.
“Cross,” which will premiere on Prime Video later this year, stars Aldis Hodge as a detective and forensic psychologist known for his ability to dig into the psyches of criminals and their victims. The cast also includes Isaiah Mustafa, Juanita Jennings, Alona Tal, Samantha Walkes, Caleb Elijah, Melody Hurd, Jennifer Wigmore, Eloise Mumford, Ryan Eggold and Johnny Ray Gill. Season 2 will see the addition of Wes Chatham, Matthew Lillard and Jeanine Mason, with Gill being upped to a series regular.

“Who are you?” a voice asks at the opening of the trailer. After a series of clips show snippets of Cross at work and with his family, and another voice describes him as “Metro P.D.’s golden boy,” he answers with a grin, “You can call me Detective Alex Cross.”
Speeding cars, rooms on fire and police chases fill the rest of the trailer, which closes with Cross standing over a man who is seated in an interrogation room. “You’re not getting a confession. You’re not in my head,” the man says. “Oh, I’m definitely living rent free,” Cross retorts.
“Cross” is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Paramount Television Studios and Skydance Television. Season 1 is executive produced by creator and showrunner Ben Watkins via his Blue Monday Productions banner. Executive producers also include Jim Dunn, Sam Ernst and Craig Siebels as well as Patterson, Bill Robinson and Patrick Santa on behalf of James Patterson Entertainment and David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Matt Thunell on behalf of Skydance. For Season 2, Dunn and Ernst have joined Watkins as co-showrunners, with J. David Shanks, Aiyana White and Hodge added to the executive producing team.
“Bringing one of James Patterson’s most iconic literary characters to life for our global Prime Video
customers was a dream come true, and we can’t wait for everyone to see Aldis Hodge’s dynamic
performance as Cross,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios. “Ben Watkins
and his team have created something unique within the crime-thriller genre that long-time fans and
newcomers alike will all enjoy. And with over thirty novels written by Patterson featuring Alex Cross as
his main protagonist, it was an easy choice to bring ‘Cross’ back for a second season.”
“I am thrilled to be embarking on another chapter of ‘Cross.’ Moments like this don’t happen by accident,” said Watkins. “Getting a Season 2 pick-up before our first season even drops is a huge testament and vote of confidence in the amazing work that our crew, cast, directors, writers and production team have delivered thus far. It’s also a direct result of the unwavering support bestowed upon us by Prime Video and our producing partners at Paramount TV Studios, Skydance and James Patterson Entertainment. I am grateful for all of the above and can’t wait to run it back even bigger and better.”

Cross Series Trailer
Alex Cross (Hodge) is a detective and forensic psychologist, uniquely capable of digging into the psyches of killers and their victims, in order to identify—and ultimately capture—the murderers. Cross is brilliant, flawed, and full of contradictions. A doting father and family man, Cross is single-minded to the point of obsession when he hunts killers. He is desperate for love, but his wife’s murder has left him too damaged to receive it. Cross is a series created and showrun by writer Ben Watkins of "Burn Notice", "Hand of God", and New York Undercover previously. Based on the book series of the same name by James Patterson. With episodes directed by Craig Siebels & Nzingha Stewart. Produced by Paramount Television and Skydance Television. Executive produced by Nzingha Stewart, Bill Bost, Jim Dunn, David Ellison, Sam Ernst, Dana Goldberg, James Patterson, Bill Robinson, Marcy Ross, Patrick Santa, Craig Siebels, Matt Thunell, and Ben Watkins. Amazon will debut the Cross series streaming on Prime Video starting sometime in 2024. Legit?
Prime Video knows what their subscribers want, and it’s shows based on literary heroes who happen to be big, tough dudes. Following the success of Reacher and Jack Ryan, next up on the list is Cross, starring Aldis Hodge as Alex Cross, author James Patterson’s character previously played by both Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry.
Hodge, a popular actor known for his roles in Straight Outta Compton and Black Adam, plays hard-nosed detective and forensic psychologist Alex Cross who has a knack for getting into the heads of killers and would-be victims. It doesn’t hurt that he’s also a big dude who can scrap if he has to.
The character Alex Cross has been the center of three movies. Freeman played him twice in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider. In 2012, Perry starred as Cross in the attempted reboot Alex Cross, which went nowhere.
Hodge is joined in the cast by Isaiah Mustafa, Juanita Jennings, Alona Tal, Samantha Walkes, Caleb Elijah, Melody Hurd, Jennifer Wigmore, Eloise Mumford, Ryan Eggold, and Johnny Ray Gill. Ben Watkins created the series and acts as showrunner.
So there’s a zero percent chance I won’t watch this. Hodge is the best Black actor working today in my opinion, and he’s been long overdue for some spotlight. Can we get a Cross/Reacher crossover because Hodge and Alan Ritchson together is just too good.
Prime Video has yet to give Cross an official launch date, but they have already green lit a second season.
Prime Video has shared the first teaser trailer for the upcoming crime thriller series Cross, which is an adaptation of James Patterson's Alex Cross novel series.
The series stars Aldis Hodge (Black Adam, City On A Hill, One Night In Miami) as Cross, a “detective and forensic psychologist, uniquely capable of digging into the psyches of killers and their victims, in order to identify—and ultimately capture—the murderers.”
It’s explained that “Cross is brilliant, flawed, and full of contradictions. A doting father and family man, Cross is single-minded to the point of obsession when he hunts killers. He is desperate for love, but his wife’s murder has left him too damaged to receive it.”
The series was created by producer and writer Ben Watkins (Burn Notice. Hand of God), and produced by Paramount Television Studios and Skydance Television.
The series cast also includes Isaiah Mustafa, Darnell Bartholomew, Ashley Rios, Stacie Greenwell, Siobhan Murphy, Sharon Taylor, Mercedes de la Zerda, as well as Jennifer Wigmore as Chief Anderson.
This looks like it could end up being a great series! It looks like the story is going to go into some dark, gritty, and intense corners of crime.
Prime Video will premiere Cross starting sometime in 2024.
James Patterson‘s most popular fictional figure is getting another screen adaptation in Cross, and from the looks of the first trailer, this Amazon Prime Video original is going to be a doozy. The streamer also renewed the series for a second season.
Cross stars Aldis Hodge as the titular detective — a character previously portrayed by Morgan Freeman in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider and Tyler Perry in 2012’s Alex Cross and featured in dozens of other non-adapted novels.
Here’s everything you need to know about the show.
Who stars in Cross?
