Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Belfry Tower which houses the musical instrument was completed in the early 15th century. At the top of the tower there is a carillon consisting of 54 bells and weighing over 30 tonnes, it is controlled automatically by the music cylinder and has seen improvements since it was initially installed in 1552 with only 18 bells. As of 2024, it is maintained by the city carillonneur Kenneth Theunissen, whose responsibilities include repositioning the pins on the drums every two years.
