The Devil in the Tarot

The Devil (XV) is the fifteenth trump or Major Arcana card. It is intended to symbolise our reactions to the temptations presented to us. The Devil also challenges the status quo and our beliefs and assumptions as to what is "right" and "wrong". In the Trinity used by the Hindus, there are three great forces - Creation, Maintenance and Destruction and the "Devil" is the force of Destruction. There can be no creation without destruction. The term "devil" derives from the times of Zoroaster (Zarathustra) and Zoroaster was responsible for the change of meaning from simply a spirit to one of an evil complexion. Many religions have since cast him in this role. But few seem to understand that he actually performs an essential role, by tempting those who would storm heaven by force into committing acts lured on by "temptation"- that keep them well away from "heaven". So the Hindus were right when they cast "the Devil" as part of the Trinity. In this video we will compare a number of Tarot cards but all these cards indicate that if you think there is a short cut on the spiritual path, you would be very very wrong. That temptation is real, and the tempter provides experiences, insights, adventures and wonder beyond most people’s comprehension, but there is always a terrible price to pay.
