Guest screen director Alfred Hitchcock introduces the story and speaks with the stars after the drama. July 8th, 1943 Constance Porter is a foreign correspondent during WWII and was a late passenger on the freighter the SS Argo that was torpedoed by a nazi submarine.

She finds herself alone on a lifeboat somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic then she rescues John Kovak who worked in the engine room from the water. Constance informs him that their ship had sunk the U-boat before going down. By the second day at sea there are nine survivors on the lifeboat and then they find in the water a survivor from the German U-boat.

Constance is the only person to speak German and becomes his interpreter. Director: Alfred Hitchcock
