Greetings, young scholars. I am Viriathus, a proud leader of the Lusitanians, and today, I shall share the story of my life and our struggle against the mighty Roman Empire.

I was born in the mountainous region of what you now know as Portugal, during a time when our people faced the relentless expansion of Rome. The Romans sought to conquer our lands, impose their laws, and strip us of our freedom. But we, the Lusitanians, were a resilient and fiercely independent people.

My journey began as a humble shepherd, living a simple life in the rugged terrain of my homeland. However, the cruelty and treachery of the Romans soon forced me into a life of resistance. Around 147 BC, after a brutal massacre by the Romans, in which many of my kin were slaughtered despite promises of peace, I rose to lead my people in defiance.

We waged a guerrilla war against the Romans, utilizing our intimate knowledge of the terrain to our advantage. Our strategy was not to engage in direct confrontation but to strike swiftly and vanish into the mountains, frustrating the Romans and sapping their strength. This approach earned me a reputation as a cunning and formidable leader.

One of our most significant victories came at the Battle of Tribola, where we ambushed the Roman legions and inflicted heavy casualties. This success boosted the morale of our people and demonstrated that the seemingly invincible Roman army could be defeated.

Under my leadership, the Lusitanians continued to resist Roman domination. Our cause was not just about defending our land; it was about preserving our way of life, our culture, and our freedom. I sought to unite the various tribes of the region, urging them to stand together against the common enemy.

Despite our successes, the Romans were relentless. They adapted their strategies and brought more forces to bear against us. Yet, we fought on, driven by our desire for freedom and justice. My reputation grew, and I became a symbol of resistance, not just for the Lusitanians but for other oppressed peoples as well.

In the end, it was not the might of the Roman legions that brought about my downfall, but treachery from within. In 139 BC, I was betrayed by those I considered allies, lured into a trap, and assassinated. My death was a blow to our cause, but the spirit of resistance I had ignited lived on.

My story is one of resilience, courage, and the unyielding desire for freedom. Though I did not live to see the ultimate liberation of my people, I take pride in the legacy I left behind. I hope my tale inspires you to stand up for what you believe in, to fight for justice, and to never underestimate the power of a united and determined people.
